Flying Brown Pelican in Breeding Plumage

Shortly after the breeding season in the tropics Brown Pelicans (Pelecanus occidentalis) start their migration northwards. This image is taken in southern California and the birds have only started on their journey. This is why they are still showing of their colorful breeding plumage, a nice contrast to the turquoise ocean water of San Diego.
